Franz Xaver Winterhalter

Franz Xaver Winterhalter

Franz Xaver Winterhalter – painter on behalf of her majesty

An exhibition at the Augustinermuseum Freiburg about one of the most famous portrait painters of Europe in the 19th century. He portrayed nobility and celebrities and last but not least the Austrian Empress Sissi. The exhibition was created in cooperation with the Palais de Compiègne near Paris and the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Texas, and was Winterhalter’s first comprehensive exhibition in Germany.

The exhibition design was based on a complementary color scheme suitable for the tall paintings. By your entrance you would be received in an atrium and could peek over a viewing axis to one of the most beautiful paintings in one of the back rooms.

During this project, I was employed by scenography valentine koppenhöfer.
